The most critical active ingredients in Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma are tanshinone compounds, including cryptotanshinone, tanshinone I, tanshinone IIA, and dihydrotanshinone. Tanshinones can improve the neurological function of central nervous system diseases in multiple dimensions and pathways, preventing and treating central nervous system diseases such as stroke, spinal cord injury, memory and cognitive dysfunction, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, etc. This article reviews the research progress on tanshinones in prevention and treatment of central nervous system diseases.
